General Santos City, Philippines –The Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) has taken a 16-year-old boy from General Santos City into custody, allegedly for hacking several government and educational websites.

In an article published by Manila Bulletin earlier today, it was reported that this action followed numerous arrests on local threat actors since late June of this year after a search warrant executed on July 18, which revealed the teenager’s involvement in compromising sensitive data.

Brig. Gen. Ronnie Cariaga, head of PNP-ACG, explained that the search was prompted by a report from April 18, 2024. This report indicated that the teen had posted the login credentials of two police officers on his Facebook account, endangering their personal and professional information.

Further investigation uncovered that the teenager had developed hacking skills, reportedly through participation in a Messenger chat group with other local threat actors.

β€œThe PNP ACG will thoroughly examine the digital devices seized from the suspect to collect evidence for potential legal action,” Cariaga said. He also urged any organizations that might have faced similar unauthorized access to report these incidents to the nearest PNP ACG office for swift intervention.

This case highlights the growing trend of young individuals engaging in cybercrime and underscores the critical need for improved cybersecurity protocols across various sectors.
